On May 28, 1959, Miss Able became one of the first monkeys to survive space flight. Miss Able was born at the Ralph Mitchell Zoo in Independence, Kan.
On May 28, 2009, in honor of the 30th anniversary of her flight, Independence, Kan., Mayor Rick Mott declared the day “Miss Able Day.”
The proclamation was followed by an event featuring displays on Miss Able and space flight in general. Dr. Barta, a local veterinarian, brought his capuchin monkey, “Gizmo,” out for children to see.
